Become a Watershed Champion!

Community empowerment is a fundamental principle behind each and every Toronto and Region Conservation Watershed Management Strategy. Under the TRCA approach, communities become the driving force for protecting and regenerating the watershed.

Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA) is seeking new members to participate in the 2010 - 2012 term for:

Residents, business and academic representatives are welcome.

The major goals of the Watershed Committees are to protect, regenerate and celebrate the watershed and to assist TRCA and its partner agencies to secure support at all levels of government and foster corporate partnerships to advance and achieve TRCA’s vision for The Living City of healthy rivers and shorelines, regional biodiversity, sustainable communities and business excellence.

Term of Appointment Members will be appointed for a two year term with a possible extension for one additional year. For approximate time commitment required for each watershed committee, please see individual Terms of Reference documents below.

Applications must be received no later than January 25, 2010.
Interviews will be scheduled for the first week in February
Meetings will begin mid to late March, 2010.

Valuable experience gained by watershed committee members

  • Making connections with environment professionals and organizations;
  • Learning about watershed management and environmental organizations;
  • Obtaining assistance in planning and implementing projects in their community;
  • Attending natural environment conservation seminars, technical training sessions and other educational programs;
  • Sharing their knowledge, experience and skills on topics such as habitat regeneration, heritage, urban agriculture, recreation and education.

Tasks and projects of watershed committee members

  • Act as local champions for the watershed;
  • Assist with implementation of the Watershed Plans for each watershed;
  • Work with communities to build capacity to deliver watershed management programs;
  • Participate in projects that protect, regenerate and celebrate the Don, Humber and Etobicoke-Mimico watersheds;
  • Advocate for the Toronto Region Remedial Action Plan.
