Life Systems Strand- Characteristics and Needs of Living Things / Growth and Change in Animals

Description

Students will examine the life cycles and the functions of the workers, drones and queen bee and learn about their specialized anatomy (wax glands, pollen sacs, eyes, stinger, etc.). They will also learn about their unique behaviour traits such as doing the bee dance. Along the walk to the bee house, the students will see honey bees and bumblebees at work in the fields collecting pollen and nectar.

At the beehouse (from the safety of a screened in viewing area), students will see bees at work and view the inner workings of a hive. Tools used by the beekeeper to open the hive and process the honey will be demonstrated. Each participant receives a taste of honey made by Kortright's own bees.
