Lake St. George Field Centre EcoSchools Stories 2009 - 2010
Waste Audit
On April 9, 2010, the Grade 7 & 8 students from Sacred Heart Catholic School participated in a Waste Audit at Lake St. George. Although they didn't know that the audit was to take place, they assisted in collecting and measuring all the waste that their group had produced over a 24-hour period. We congratulated the students on doing a very good job of sorting materials. With the exception of some non-recyclable plastics in a blue box and a green bin, there was no contamination in the various waste bins. In addition, there was very little true garbage produced by the group...they achieved an outstanding 82% diversion rate!
Water and Energy Conservation
Eco-Buddies recording boards were installed in both Snively and Bond dorms last year. Before morning, afternoon and evening programs, one or two female and male students are responsible for checking their respective sides of the dorms for running taps and lights left on. The taps and lights are turned off and the data is recorded.
During this final check, students also make sure that bedroom doors are left open so that the air can circulate allowing the geothermal system to run efficiently.
