Our Greener Side Celebration Shows How Easy It Is To Be Green

On Saturday, May 8th, residents of York Region will discover everything there is to know about living an eco-friendly lifestyle at the 2nd Annual Our Greener Side Celebration, presented by The Regional Municipality of York and Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA). This one-day, eco-friendly and carbon-neutral community event features family-friendly activities and engaging demonstrations designed to help residents from York Region and other Greater Toronto Area (GTA) communities live sustainably, from reducing waste and minimizing water usage to eating locally and travelling "green."

Explore more than 60 different exhibits and activities from eight theme areas: backyard greening, green energy, green living, habitat conservation, local foods and agriculture, revolution in transportation, waste reduction and water conservation. Each themed area will include a variety of hands-on activities such as green crafts, guided nature walks, maple syrup demonstration and tree planting, as well as exhibitor booths from some of the greenest organizations in the GTA.

The main stage features:

  • Sciensational Sssnakes!!
  • SoundCycle: Canada's first bicycle powered sound system presented by Mr. Sometime Something
  • Food Jammers: Food Network Canada's stunt chefs transform everyday materials and local ingredients into brilliant meals

New this year, Our Greener Side Celebration will be screening a special selection of environmental films in partnership with Planet in Focus, producer of Canada's preeminent international environmental film and video festival, and hosting expert speakers at the event including:

11 a.m. Bringing Green Energy into Your Home with Alex Waters of Kortright Centre for Conservation

12 p.m. Ecological Living: Going Green Room by Room with Candice Batista, host, creator and producer of A Greener Toronto

1 p.m.   Local, Sustainable Food: Voting with One's Dollars with Lori Stahlbrand of Local Food Plus

2 p.m.   Dabble or Dominate? How to Use Native Plants in Your Garden with Aileen Barclay of Water for Tomorrow's Water Efficiency and Conservation Education Program
