About Pickering Ajax Citizens Together For The Environment (PACT)

PACT was formed in the mid 1980s to urge Metropolitan Toronto to close the Brock West Landfill and protest a proposed Metropolitan Toronto dump on the Brock South Lands. In addition, PACT campaigned tirelessly to require municipalities to review their waste management programs, stressing the four R's (reduce, reuse, recover and recycle) to landfill. As a result of their efforts, the Brock South Lands were preserved and eventually acquired by Toronto and Region Conservation Authority to be part of the Greenwood Conservation Lands - 675 hectares of protected greenspace connecting Pickering and Ajax. The PACT tradition of environmental stewardship still carries on today through the group: Pickering Ajax Citizens Together to Protect Our Water.
