Explore the world of the Monarch Butterfly at the Tommy Thompson Park Butterfly Festival

WHO:                        Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA) hosts the 6th annual Tommy Thompson Park (TTP) Butterfly Festival. Experts from TRCA and other nature group associations and vendors will be on hand at the festival. Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station will host bird banding demonstrations and information about the research being conducted.


WHAT:                      Learn everything there is to know about Monarch Butterflies at the TTP Butterfly Festival, a summer celebration to mark the start of the annual southern migration of the Monarch Butterfly to Mexico.   The TTP Butterfly Festival celebrates the incredible migratory journey of Monarch Butterflies from Toronto to Mexico at TTP, a staging location for Monarchs before they migrate across Lake Ontario, and the importance of habitat conservation.

Late August is the prime time to get a glimpse of this butterfly as they gather at natural settings like Tommy Thompson Park. The TTP Butterfly Festival features free guided  butterfly walks, educational activities, butterfly gardening workshops, other butterfly focused displays and more!  The festival connects participants to nature and provides  opportunities to learn about the incredible 3,500 km migration of the Monarch, the diversity of butterflies in Toronto and the importance of habitat conservation. Visitors can discover some of the more than 55 species of butterflies and moths recorded to date at the park.

Fall migration monitoring program for songbirds is also underway at the TTP Bird Research Station.  Participants will have the opportunity to learn about migratory songbirds and see a live bird banding demonstration.
