Harbourfront Centre announces opening of NO FLAT CITY: Toronto's Incomparable Terrain (June 20, 2014 - June 2015)

Jun 18, 2014

TORONTO, ON (May 27 2014) - Harbourfront Centre, in partnership with Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA) and with the generous support of Menkes Developments, has commissioned six artists for a group exhibition entitled, NO FLAT CITY: Toronto's Incomparable Terrain. The exhibition aims to provide a greater understanding of Toronto as a unique geographical landmass. The outdoor exhibitionwill consist of 40 large steel outdoor structures at waterfront site that house 72 large scale photographic images creating the largest outdoor exhibition space in Canada.

NO FLAT CITY is a year-long exhibition opening to the public on Friday, June 20, 2014, and the stunning follow-up to NINE RIVERS CITY: Toronto's Extraordinary Waterways, which is currently on display until June 1, 2014. Both exhibitions reveal the true evolution of the City of Toronto by focusing on its many undocumented and unexpected characteristics.

"NO FLAT CITY, the second installment of our two year partnership with TRCA and Menkes Developments, will use the same methodology as NINE RIVERS CITY," explains Patrick Macaulay, Harbourfront Centre's director of Visual Arts. "This time, we're engaging visual artists to explore the greater Toronto region and focus on the distinctive land formations and landscapes they encounter. People and their stories will be a prime focus throughout each of the theme areas which include Historic Landforms, Reshaping the Land, Living in the Landscape, and People and the Land."

Featured artists include Sarah Burtscher, Chloë Ellingson, Brett Gundlock, Brendan George Ko, Darren Rigo, and Victoria Vitasek. Each represents the broadest range of photographic practice, and is recognized for their photo documentary, studio and series work activities. Each artist will bring their own unique artistic approach to this exciting pairing of visual arts with a complex provincial asset.

Last year, NINE RIVERS CITY dispelled the myth about Toronto being exclusively a 'lake city' by showcasing the city's unique, interconnected river systems and their connection to Lake Ontario. This year, NO FLAT CITY challenges the notion of Toronto being a 'flat city', by exploring and showcasing the surprising topography and land formations that make up the City of Toronto and its surrounding region.
