TORONTO, October 16, 2012 - Partners in Project Green announced the recipients of the 2012 Partners in Project Green Sustainability Awards and winner of the People Power Challenge and at Thursday's fall networking event.

"This year's award recipients highlight how employee engagement can contribute to reducing costs and improve environmental performance within an organization," shared Jennifer Taves, Project Manager, Partners in Project Green.

The awards recognize the innovative and inspiring work of local businesses that are embracing sustainability and realizing the business benefits of their actions.  Employee Engagement in Sustainability was evaluated in three areas: employee participation (percentage of facility employee's participating in environmental initiatives and projects); governance (established governance structures supporting employee engagement); and results (projects and innovations directly resulting from employee engagement). The winners were selected by a jury of their peers that included the previous years' recipient.

The Scarborough Town Centre won the Partners in Project Green Employee Engagement - Hospitality Award. Since 2009, Oxford Properties has worked extremely hard on green initiatives to meet their corporate sustainability goals at the Scarborough Town Centre. This goal is supported by their strong commitment to their 11 member Green Team made up of tenants, operations, marketing, security, administration, customer service, and cleaning staff. Their success is a direct result of their engaged and educated staff.

Rockwell Automation won the Partners in Project Green Employee Engagement - Manufacturing Award. With 900 employees at their Cambridge location, Rockwell Automation has a great deal of employee participation in community environmental and safety programs with great success in their Zero Waste program.

Menkes won the Partners in Project Green Employee Engagement - Office Award. Employee and tenant engagement has an important role in Menkes' company culture. In addition to hosting a multitude of sustainability themed events and promotions, they also support tenant sustainability initiatives, most notably with Proctor & Gamble building. They aim to continually build upon the awareness of tenants and employees each year through their Working Green program and People Power Challenge.

Partner's in Project Green also announced the winner of the People Power Challenge - a yearlong contest that challenged businesses to get their employees involved in identifying energy, water and waste reduction opportunities and improvements for their organizations. Points were awarded for achieving criteria in three categories: communication and engagement; capacity; and conservation.

Broan NuTone won the People Power Challenge. It was an exciting race to the end, but employee engagement and commitment to conservation won out in the end. The $2,500 cash reward will help Broan NuTone in acquiring their ISO50001 certification.

Companies still have a chance to register to the second round of the People Power Challenge commencing November 1, 2012. The three sub-challenges for the year are themed under: green procurement, green building, and transportation.

To assist throughout the year-long challenge, Partners in Project Green will provide employee engagement tools, education materials and reporting templates that will make it easy for your team to engage your peers in generating ways to improve your company's environmental performance.

The People Power Challenge is a cross-sector challenge, and is open to offices, manufacturers, hotels, logistics organizations and others.  Companies of all sizes are encouraged to get involved. Results will be adjusted for numbers of employees per company to ensure accurate comparison.
