Toronto and Region Conservation and Partners Announce the Recipient of the Green Home Makeover

Jul 29, 2011

(TORONTO, July 29, 2011) Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA) is pleased to announce that Marisa Mancuso and Paul Gay, of Brampton's County Court neighbourhood, are the recipients of a free Green Home Makeover.  The family will receive a complete green home renovation that will include a high-efficiency HVAC system, insulation and weatherization, energy efficient appliances, Energy Star windows and doors, low flow toilets, rain barrels, permeable driveway, water efficient landscaping for the front yard and other innovative green technologies and products.

"When I first met with Paul and Marisa they were so willing to open their home up to this project. Imagine, volunteering to be under renovation," said Cliff Coppolino, Stewardship Coordinator at TRCA.  "Their home is a perfect fit, the improvements that have been identified for their property will have a huge impact, show a change in savings and provide a real-life example for their neighbours to follow."

The Makeover will showcase all aspects of a green lifestyle and demonstrate how homeowners can adapt any one of the green retrofit improvements in their own homes. The project will also show how green renovations can generate significant savings for years to come and also improve home comfort. The renovation is expected to be complete by the end of October with an official grand opening of the home scheduled for Spring 2012.

"We are thrilled that our home was selected to receive the Green Home Makeover. We moved into the County Court area in 1992 and have raised three boys in our home," said Marisa Mancuso. "Like many other people we know, we currently do the simple things to conserve energy and have always wanted to do more.  We hope that by making these renovations and improving the mechanics of our home, not only will there be a further benefit to the environment but also improved home comfort, increased curb appeal and a reduction to our utility expenses. We are now looking forward to seeing and sharing these overall results with our friends and neighbours. We hope it will inspire others to make changes in their own homes."

The Green Home Makeover is part of the Sustainable Neighbourhood Retrofit Action Plan (SNAP) taking place in the neighbourhood. The initiative is a partnership between TRCA, the Region of Peel and the City of Brampton to develop action plans to improve the local environment at the neighbourhood scale and to build resiliency against climate change by greening local infrastructure and encouraging residents to participate and learn what they can do at home to contribute to a greener community.

Marisa and Paul were among 10 homeowners who applied for the Green Home Makeover in February 2011. They were chosen by a selection jury made up of representatives from TRCA, the City of Brampton and the Region of Peel, as well as Platinum and Gold Sponsors. As part of the selection process, the jury evaluated all applications and conducted interviews and home assessments to select the home and family who would best showcase change. After the retrofit, TRCA and partners will monitor the home to evaluate the effectiveness of the retrofit elements in enhancing overall house performance. TRCA will also host tours of the home for interested members of the public for two years after the retrofit.

All renovations and improvements as part of the Green Home Makeover are made possible thanks to generous donations from Lead Platinum Sponsor Reliance Home Comfort, Platinum Sponsor Sears Canada, Gold Sponsor GreenSaver, and numerous Silver Sponsors. The Green Home Makeover is also receiving support from municipal partners, the Region of Peel and the City of Brampton. Other partners include Enbridge Gas Distribution and Hydro One Brampton as well as green building, water and landscape industry associations.
