Sunny Days for Conservation Fundraiser Shines a Light on Outdoor Education and Trails in Durham

Apr 14, 2011

Toronto, April 13,2011-  On April 28, Toronto and Region Conservation and Deer Creek Golf and Banquet Facility will host the second annual Sunny Days for Conservation, an environmental fundraising event with emcee Dan Matheson of CTV News. Headlining the event is Ian Thomas, one of Canada's most prolific singer-songwriters.

"Our first ever Sunny Days for Conservation last year was a great success and, this year we're again bringing together people who don't often think they share the same priorities, but we all agree that making outdoor education and trails accessible to people with different ability and income levels is important," said Ron Halliday, of Coughlan Homes, and a Durham Region resident.

All proceeds from the event will go to The Conservation Foundation of Greater Toronto to support hands-on projects undertaken by Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA) in Durham Region. Specifically, Sunny Days for Conservation will raise funds for two initiatives in the community:

Claremont Outdoor Education Centre and TRCA Trails in Durham Region

Funds raised will help to ensure that all students, of differing abilities and family economic status, will be able to experience outdoor education programs at this TRCA facility. Located along Duffins Creek, this residential centre offers a wide range of environmental programs providing elementary and high school students with hands-on learning experiences.

Funds raised will also be used to keep the amazing 140 kilometres of interconnected natural system recreation trails safe, educational and enjoyable. This remarkable and scenic trail system exists on TRCA conservation lands in western Durham Region, where thousands of users are provided with the opportunity to stay active and lead healthy lifestyles. It also provides the foundation for year round outdoor activities, which the whole family can enjoy.

Working with various partners, TRCA leads a variety of conservation initiatives, including environmental education, outdoor recreation, habitat restoration and community stewardship.
