Volunteers and Interns
Volunteer and Intern Policy
Volunteers have been, and will continue to be, an integral component of Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA). Volunteers complement and support the work of full-time and seasonal staff, accomplish important tasks that would not otherwise be done and support programs that could cease to exist without volunteer participation. Below is a guide to a consistent, accountable approach to working with volunteers that fits with the vision for The Living City. Furthermore, this policy governs TRCA's responsibilities to its volunteers, as well as the selection and placement, training, supervision, compensation and safety of volunteers. The policy also governs volunteer rights and their responsibilities to TRCA.

Who can volunteer or intern?
Anyone can volunteer (groups, individuals, students, working professionals, retirees, etc.) with the EVN indoors or out, full time or part time, provided they meet the following requirements:
- Individual volunteers must be 16 or older, unless accompanied by an adult (14 or older for Kortright volunteers and 15 or older for Black Creek Pioneer Village).
- Volunteers or interns age 18 or older who will be working with children or the public must clear a police record check.

There are a wide variety of opportunities available through the EVN. Each position posted will give you a description of the type and level of experience required. Some positions require a great deal of experience and education, some require little or none at all!
What Kind of Opportunities are available?
Volunteer and intern opportunities are available at a variety of Greater Toronto Area (GTA) locations throughout the year, and range from one-time events to ongoing jobs. They also range from jobs that require limited experience to highly skilled positions. For a categorized list of volunteer and intern job opportunities, please see our Volunteer and Intern Job Board.
How long do I have to commit for?
Time commitments are as varied as the jobs themselves, and are listed on each job posting. Requirements for a volunteer opportunity can range anywhere from a minimum of three hours to three years. Intern opportunities generally last between one and twelve months.
Can my volunteer hours count toward my high school graduation requirements?
The EVN is qualified to provide you with the volunteer hours you require for graduation, and there are a variety of options for you to choose from. Have a look at the Volunteer Job Board or contact Dash Paja at dpaja@trca.on.ca or 416-661-6600 ext. 5593.
