Yonge / York Mills Flood Control Channel Maintenance
Project Background:
One of the main roles of the Toronto & Region Conservation Authority is to manage floodplains within our jurisdiction and to reduce flood risk wherever possible. One of the ways we achieve this goal is through the monitoring and maintenance of a number of flood control dams and channels across our jurisdiction. In the City of Toronto, the Yonge/York Mills Channel requires maintenance so that public safety standards can be upheld and potential for flooding on the properties along the channel can be reduced. The maintenance will be comprised of two phases and we will be working closely with area residents, special interest groups and the City of Toronto throughout the entire project. Phase 1 Project Summary:
The removal of collapsed concrete slabs and replacement with riverstone boulders will take place along the portion of the channel located south of York Mills Rd. approximately 50 metres east of Yonge St. The construction is scheduled to commence early December 2011 and will take 2 weeks to complete.
Phase 2 Project Summary:
The removal of sediment and vegetation within the channel will take place along the portion of the channel between Donino Ave. and the Rosedale Golf Club and will restore channel capacity which is essential to preventing flooding during severe storm events. The construction is scheduled to commence early December 2011 and is anticipated to be completed by March 31, 2012.
